In 2006, I started a coffee roasting and retail business in Billerica, Massachusetts. Equipped with an MBA from Babson, a solid business plan I had developed as part of my MBA sales and marketing for entrepreneurs' class project and 12 years' experience in Finance and Accounting, I thought I was prepared for success.
3 years later, worn down by trying to do it all myself while juggling the responsibilities of a young family, I felt disillusioned. I was way off my envisioned track for success. I could not even keep up with my books!
I hired Alice to help with bookkeeping; she had completed her accounting degree and had been working for a few years. She was surprised to learn I was using excel spreadsheets for accounting. She helped set up QuickBooks, cleaned up our backlog of unrecorded transactions, integrated QuickBooks with our merchant service providers and set up processes to close the books at the end of each month. In short, she streamlined bookkeeping and financial reporting which helped me manage the business more effectively.
In 2014, Alice used her experience to launch a bookkeeping and financial reporting consulting business. She built her consulting practice by providing excellent personalized customer service to owners of small and medium sized companies. Her work is impeccable. So, I am not surprised she grew her business through referrals to the point where she could not take on more clients.
The idea for IKAN Business Partners was born as we discussed how Alice can continue to grow while creating an opportunity for others.
